Suaalii Confirms Fitness Ahead of Lions Tour

Australia’s high-profile rugby union recruit, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, has declared he will be match-ready to face the British and Irish Lions this summer, despite a recent setback that required jaw surgery and led to a 5kg weight loss.

Big-Money Switch from League to Union
At just 21 years old, Suaalii transitioned from rugby league’s Sydney Roosters on a lucrative three-year deal reportedly worth A$5.35 million (£2.6 million). He made his Wallabies debut in a November victory over England, signaling a promising start to his union career.

Injury Scare Raises Lions Tour Doubts
Suaalii’s progress hit a bump in May when he fractured his jaw following a collision with Waratahs teammate Andrew Kellaway. The incident cast doubt over his availability for the upcoming Lions series.

Confident Comeback Underway
Despite initial concerns, Suaalii is optimistic about his recovery. “I’ll be fully fit for the Lions,” he said, estimating his current condition at “97%.” He acknowledged feeling anxious at first, given the significance of the series for both his career and Australian rugby.

Recovery Supported by Family
Following the surgery, Suaalii wore a mask to conceal swelling and struggled to maintain his weight due to eating difficulties. “I’ve put it all back on now,” he said, crediting his mother and family for helping him stay on track with nutrition and recovery.

Downplaying Rivalry With Tuipulotu
Suaalii brushed aside any talk of a personal rivalry with Scotland’s Sione Tuipulotu, despite a notable on-field clash during the Wallabies’ autumn match at Murrayfield. “I’m focused on what I can do for the team,” he said, adding that he’s prepared to face anyone in the Lions squad.

Embracing Positional Flexibility
Initially deployed as an outside centre, Suaalii has recently excelled at full-back for the Waratahs, earning a spot in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific Team of the Year. “Seeing the game from a different position makes you better overall,” he explained, noting his comfort in playing wing, centre, or full-back.

Eyes on Fiji Test as Comeback Target
Suaalii is aiming to return to the field for Australia’s warm-up match against Fiji on 6 July. The three-Test series against the British and Irish Lions is set to follow on 19 July, 26 July, and 2 August, with all matches kicking off at 11:00 BST.
