Disc Queen Onyekwere Plots Medal Push at World Championships
Nigeria’s discus throw ace and African record holder, Chioma Onyekwere, has set her sights on winning a medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships scheduled to hold in Tokyo, Japan, this September, Sport360NG reports.
The 31-year-old reaffirmed her dominance on the local scene at the recently concluded Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, where she successfully defended her national title.
Onyekwere recorded a winning throw of 60.74 metres, finishing ahead of her closest rival, Obiageri Amaechi, who posted 59.39 metres. The victory marked Onyekwere’s third national title, adding to her previous triumphs in 2021 and 2024.
The U.S.-based athlete, who clinched gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is gearing up for what will be her fourth appearance at the World Championships, having previously featured in Doha (2019), Oregon (2022), and Budapest (2023).
Onyekwere expressed her determination to secure a place on the podium in Tokyo.
“My aim is to always try to medal. That’s what drives all of us, to compete among the best and give our best performances,” she said. “Everyone out there is hoping for a medal, and I’m no different. I want to make it to the podium.”
With a season-best mark of 64.12m set earlier this year in Oklahoma, the Michigan-born thrower heads into the global meet full of confidence. Her consistent form at the national trials has also boosted her chances of reaching the final and possibly claiming her first-ever World Championships medal.
