BREAKING: Liverpool part ways with Arne Slot as Iraola emerges as favourite

Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after two years at Anfield, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s tenure despite his role in delivering the club’s historic 20th English league title, Sport360NG reports. 

The 47-year-old enjoyed a dream start on Merseyside, guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory during his first campaign. However, a significant drop in performances during the recently concluded season prompted the club’s hierarchy to make a managerial change.

Liverpool ended the league campaign in fifth place with 60 points, securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League but finishing 25 points adrift of champions Arsenal. It marked the club’s lowest points tally since the 2015-16 season.

Club owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) acknowledged Slot’s achievements while confirming the decision to part ways.

In a statement, the ownership group praised the former Feyenoord manager for his leadership, professionalism and contribution to the club, highlighting the success he delivered during his time in charge.

Iraola Identified as Leading Candidate for Anfield Vacancy

With the search for a new manager already underway, former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Slot.

Liverpool have reportedly opened discussions with the Spaniard, who is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting coaches due to his aggressive and attack-minded approach.

The 43-year-old shares a previous working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, having been appointed Bournemouth manager while Hughes served as technical director at the south coast club.

Iraola impressed during his time with the Cherries, leading them to a strong campaign that saw Bournemouth finish just one place and three points behind Liverpool while securing qualification for the Europa League.

Sources close to the club suggest Liverpool’s leadership believes a more dynamic and front-foot style of football is needed as they enter the next phase of their sporting project.

Club Chiefs Back Change Despite Slot’s Achievements

The decision to remove Slot was reportedly led by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards alongside sporting director Hughes after a review of the team’s progress following the end of the season.

Although Liverpool had publicly maintained that a managerial change was not under consideration, club officials ultimately concluded that a fresh tactical direction would better serve the squad moving forward.

Slot arrived at Anfield in 2024 as the successor to legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down after nine years at the helm. While Klopp’s era was defined by relentless, high-intensity football that delivered every major trophy available, Liverpool struggled to consistently replicate that identity under Slot.

Earlier this month, star forward Mohamed Salah voiced concerns over the team’s style after a defeat to Aston Villa, stating that Liverpool needed to become a feared attacking force once again.

In explaining the decision, FSG stressed that the move was not a reflection of Slot’s coaching ability but rather a strategic choice designed to alter the team’s trajectory.

Massive Investment Fails to Deliver Expected Progress

Liverpool backed Slot heavily in the transfer market, spending £415 million last summer, the largest single-window outlay by a British club.

Among the marquee arrivals were striker Alexander Isak, signed from Newcastle United for a British-record £125 million fee, and German playmaker Florian Wirtz, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116 million.

Despite the significant investment, Liverpool failed to mount a serious title defence and endured an inconsistent campaign.

The season was also overshadowed by tragedy following the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in July. The Portuguese international had been a regular feature in Slot’s squad.

FSG paid tribute to Slot’s handling of the difficult period, praising the compassion and humanity he demonstrated while helping the club navigate one of the most challenging moments in its recent history.

While Liverpool now prepares for a new chapter, the club insisted Slot’s legacy remains secure, particularly for delivering a landmark league title in his debut season. His departure is expected to be followed by changes within the coaching staff, although no official announcements regarding his backroom team have yet been made.
