Slot backs Liverpool to respond amid slump, pays tribute to departing Robertson
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has reiterated that he retains the full backing of the club’s leadership and supporters despite a difficult spell that has intensified scrutiny over his future at Anfield, Sport360NG reports.
The Dutchman, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in June 2024 and guided the club to the Premier League title in his debut campaign, is now battling to secure a European place. Liverpool currently sit fifth, with only seven points separating them from 13th-placed Bournemouth.
Recent results have compounded the pressure. The Reds have collected just one point from their last three league fixtures, including a 2-1 defeat to Brighton. They were also knocked out of the FA Cup following a heavy 4-0 loss to Manchester City, before suffering their 16th defeat of the season in a 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
In Paris, Liverpool struggled to impose themselves, managing just 26% possession and three attempts on goal compared to PSG’s 18. The performance prompted former defender Stephen Warnock to suggest confidence within the squad had reached a low point, while journalist Julien Laurens questioned whether Slot would remain in charge beyond the current season.
Despite the criticism, Slot, who is contracted until 2027, insists he is not concerned about his position and highlighted the unwavering support from both the club hierarchy and fans.
“I feel a lot of backing, not only from the owners but also from Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards,” Slot said. “As strange as it may sound, I also feel the support from the fans.
“In Paris, even after the defeat to Manchester City, the supporters were singing and showing their appreciation. We were outplayed, but they continued to clap and encourage the team.”
Looking ahead, Slot described the closing weeks of the season as decisive, starting with Fulham’s visit to Anfield. He believes the defeat in Paris can serve as a catalyst for improvement.
“We faced the champions of Europe and saw that we were not at the level required,” he added. “Now we have a few days to respond and show we can be more competitive. It’s a reminder of where we want to be next season, but first we must deliver in the league.”
Meanwhile, Slot also paid tribute to long-serving defender Andy Robertson, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.
The Scotland international will depart after nine years at Anfield, having made 373 appearances and won nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. However, his involvement has diminished this season, with just 19 league outings as he fell behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order.
“Andy has been exceptional for this club, both as a player and as a person,” Slot said. “His intensity is what stands out most. He’s someone who has given everything, won everything here, and truly loves the club.
“This season he hasn’t played as regularly as before, and that has influenced his decision, but he leaves after an outstanding period at Liverpool.”
