Ogunsakin earns spot in Roland Garros junior qualifiers

Nigeria’s emerging tennis sensation Seun Ogunsakin has secured a place in the qualifying round of the 2026 Roland Garros junior tournament scheduled to take place in France from May 31 to June 6, Sport360NG reports.

Ogunsakin earned his place on the entry list following a steady rise in the 5junior rankings, boosted by his regular appearances with the International Tennis Federation’s Grand Slam Player Development Programme team.

The Nigerian youngster is currently ranked 66th on the entry list and is among the 24 players selected for the qualifying rounds, with 46 players gaining automatic entry into the main draw.

The Ekiti State-born player has enjoyed an impressive season on the junior circuit, climbing the rankings through a string of notable performances.

One of the highlights of his campaign came in Cairo, Egypt, where he won the ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship after defeating Botswana’s Ntugamili Raguin in the final to claim one of the biggest titles of his career so far.

Ogunsakin, 17, will now turn his attention to the clay courts in France, where he has recorded encouraging results. The Nigerian has won 13 of his last 19 matches on clay, giving him a 68 per cent success rate on the surface.

The official draw for the tournament is expected to be released in the coming days.

The Roland Garros junior competition will run alongside the French Open, with some of the world’s brightest young talents aiming to follow in the footsteps of reigning champions Niels McDonald and Lilli Tagger, winners of the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in 2025.
