South Africa Beat England to seal ODI series at Lord’s

South Africa clinched a five-run victory at Lord’s to wrap up the Metro Bank ODI series with a match to spare, extending England’s struggles in the 50-over format, Sport360NG reports.

Chasing 331, a target that would have been the highest successful run chase in an ODI at the ground, England closed on 325-9, falling agonisingly short despite late resistance from Jofra Archer.

Matthew Breetzke’s 85 and Tristan Stubbs’ 58 anchored the Proteas’ innings, while Dewald Brevis added a blistering 42 from just 20 balls to push the total to 330-8. Archer impressed with the ball, taking 4-62, but England’s spin options proved costly, with Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks conceding 112 runs from their combined 10 overs.

The chase began poorly when Jamie Smith fell first ball, and although Bethell struck a lively 58 and Joe Root looked assured with 61, both fell in quick succession to halt England’s momentum. Jos Buttler (61), Harry Brook (33) and Jacks (39) offered cameos, but none were able to fully take control.

Archer, unbeaten on 27, gave the home crowd late hope as England required 16 from the final over, but spinner Senuran Muthusamy kept his composure. Archer needed a six off the last ball to tie, but could only manage a single.

The defeat marks England’s first series loss under white-ball captain Harry Brook and their fifth in six ODI series since the 2023 World Cup. It also leaves them facing the prospect of a home ODI whitewash for the first time since 2006 unless they win Sunday’s final match in Southampton.

England’s concerns deepen

While this performance was an improvement on the heavy defeat at Headingley, it still underlined England’s growing issues in one-day cricket. They have now won just three of their past 12 ODIs, all against West Indies earlier this year.

With Ben Stokes sidelined and Sam Curran out of favour, England’s lack of a reliable seam-bowling all-rounder is being exposed. Bethell and Jacks, tasked with sharing the fifth-bowler duties, were aggressively targeted by South Africa’s middle order.

There was at least encouragement from Bethell’s innings, his first half-century since May, as he took the attack to South Africa’s spinners with three sixes in his 24-ball fifty. But once he and Root departed, England never regained control.

Proteas underline progress

The result capped another strong showing for South Africa at Lord’s, where they had already claimed the World Test Championship earlier in the summer. Missing Kagiso Rabada, Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder, they still produced a composed display, with Breetzke setting a record by passing fifty in each of his first five ODI appearances.

Although England fought back through Archer and Adil Rashid after an opening stand of 73 between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, the Proteas’ 147-run stand between Breetzke and Stubbs proved decisive. Even with a late slowdown, their total was just enough to expose England’s frailties once more.
