Kamada’s late heroics earn Japan draw against Netherlands in World Cup opener

Japan fight back twice to claim valuable point, Daichi Kamada struck in the closing stages to rescue a deserved draw for Japan as they battled back twice against the Netherlands in an entertaining Group F encounter in Dallas, Sport360NG reports.

With just two minutes remaining, the Crystal Palace midfielder met Koki Ogawa‘s goal-bound effort with a clever header that wrong-footed the Dutch defence and goalkeeper, ensuring Japan secured a hard-earned point from one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the group stage.

The result capped an impressive comeback from the Samurai Blue, who refused to surrender despite finding themselves behind on two occasions.

Dutch Dominate Early but Fail to Capitalise

The contest took time to find its rhythm, with the Netherlands controlling much of a cautious opening period without fully converting their superiority into goals.

Ronald Koeman’s side looked the more threatening before the break, largely through the lively Donyell Malen, who repeatedly tested Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The Japanese shot-stopper was called into action several times to keep the scores level during a subdued first half.

The breakthrough eventually arrived shortly after the restart. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet a pinpoint cross from club team-mate Ryan Gravenberch, directing a powerful header beyond Suzuki in the 51st minute.

Japan’s response was immediate. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura drove a low effort towards goal that carried enough pace to beat Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and restore parity.

Summerville Strike Sets Up Dramatic Finale

The Dutch regained control midway through the second half thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Crysencio Summerville.

The West Ham United forward cut inside the penalty area before firing a precise low shot beyond Suzuki’s reach to put the Netherlands back in front after 64 minutes.

However, Japan continued to push forward in search of another equaliser and maintained pressure on a Dutch defence that never appeared fully comfortable protecting its advantage.

Their persistence paid off late in the game when Kamada reacted quickest inside the box, glancing Ogawa’s effort into the net to spark celebrations among the large contingent of Japanese supporters inside the stadium.

Japan Show Why They Are Considered Dark Horses

Japan arrived at the tournament with growing expectations following a series of impressive performances, including a notable friendly victory over England at Wembley earlier this year.

Against one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights, they displayed the qualities that have led many observers to view them as potential surprise contenders. Resilience, discipline and an unwavering attacking intent allowed them to remain competitive throughout despite twice trailing.

The point could prove significant as the group stage unfolds, particularly given the calibre of opposition.

For the Netherlands, meanwhile, the result is likely to feel like a missed opportunity. Despite boasting a starting line-up packed with Premier League talent, Koeman’s side failed to hold onto the lead on two separate occasions.

While there were encouraging moments in attack, defensive vulnerabilities ultimately prevented them from taking all three points, leaving the Dutch camp frustrated after surrendering a winning position late in the contest.
