Over 1,000 participants set for 2026 women run in Abeokuta
No fewer than 1,000 women are expected to participate in the 2026 Women Run taking place today in Abeokuta, as organisers gear up for another major edition of the fitness-driven initiative focused on promoting healthy lifestyles, Sport360NG reports.
The 5km race has attracted wide interest across the region, with organisers confirming that registration has already surpassed the 1,000 mark ahead of the event.
Distribution of kits has continued across the state, with more than 500 runners having collected their materials as of Friday, while arrangements remain ongoing in preparation for race day.
Speaking during a press briefing at the MKO Abiola Sport Arena, Managing Director of Brussels Sport Management Limited, Yetunde Johnson, expressed gratitude to partners and stakeholders for their consistent backing of the initiative. She emphasised the importance of maintaining good health and acknowledged the contributions of supporters.
She said the event continues to gain momentum, with expectations high for an even more impactful outing this year.
The race is scheduled to begin at Sapon, passing through Isale Igbeyin, the Central Bank of Nigeria axis, the Guaranty Trust Bank corridor, and over both Kuto and NNPC bridges, before concluding at the stadium.
Cash prizes of N500,000, N300,000, and N200,000 have been set aside for the top three finishers.
Project consultant Oweifie Ebidowei highlighted the steady growth of the initiative, now in its fourth edition, noting improvements in participation and organisation over the years. He assured that all logistics have been finalised to ensure a smooth start.
According to him, the race will commence promptly at 8am, with medals available for participants who meet the required time, adding that excitement is already building within Abeokuta.
Also speaking, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, represented by the ministry’s Director, Seyi Sonde, praised corporate organisations for their role in supporting the event. He stressed the need for continued collaboration in advancing sports development and talent discovery.
Organisers have also put measures in place to ensure a seamless experience for participants, including the provision of water stations, route volunteers, and entertainment at the finish line.
