Real Madrid reach agreement to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella
Spanish international set for Bernabeu move after world cup, Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella in a deal valued at £47.5 million, with an additional £4.3 million in performance-related bonuses, Sport360NG reports.
The transfer is expected to be completed after the FIFA World Cup, with all parties understood to have agreed to the terms of a permanent move. Cucurella is currently representing Spain at the tournament being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The proposed transfer would bring an end to the defender’s four-year spell at Stamford Bridge, having joined the Blues from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for a fee of around £63 million.
Madrid Continue Squad Rebuild Under Mourinho
Real Madrid’s recruitment drive appears to be gathering pace following the re-election of club president Florentino Perez and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as head coach.
In addition to Cucurella, the Spanish giants are believed to be pursuing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as part of their summer overhaul.
Meanwhile, France international Ibrahima Konate is reportedly on course to join the club after departing Liverpool, further strengthening Madrid’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
Desire to Return to Spain Influenced Decision
A return to his homeland had long been viewed as an attractive option for Cucurella, who progressed through Barcelona’s youth system before establishing himself in professional football.
The defender had previously been linked with both Atletico Madrid and a return to Barcelona, but Real Madrid now appear to have won the race for his signature.
Sources suggest the opportunity to return to Spain played a significant role in the player’s willingness to make the move, especially as he enters the latter stages of his prime years.
Chelsea Turmoil Preceded Exit
Cucurella’s departure follows a difficult period at Chelsea, both on and off the pitch.
During the March international break, the Spain international publicly expressed concerns about the club’s leadership structure following the mid-season exit of manager Enzo Maresca. Reports indicated that several Spanish-speaking members of the squad shared similar frustrations during a turbulent campaign.
The team struggled to find consistency under Maresca’s successor Liam Rosenior, with performances falling below expectations throughout the season.
Although Cucurella had two years remaining on his contract after agreeing improved terms last year, Chelsea were ultimately willing to sanction the transfer. The absence of a contract extension is believed to have influenced the club’s decision to cash in on the defender.
Chelsea Begin New Era Under Alonso
Chelsea’s disappointing campaign ended with a 10th-place finish in the Premier League and failure to secure European qualification.
Rosenior was sacked following the conclusion of the season, despite a brief spell under caretaker manager Calum McFarlane as the club searched for stability.
Looking ahead, Chelsea have turned to former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who has been appointed as the club’s permanent manager for the 2026-27 season as the Blues attempt to rebuild after a challenging year.
