UCL: Arsenal edge closer to final despite VAR controversy in Atletico draw

Arsenal secured a hard-fought draw against Atletico Madrid in a dramatic first-leg encounter of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, with both sides converting penalties in a match heavily influenced by VAR decisions, Sport360NG reports.

The visitors struck first just before half-time when Viktor Gyokeres won and converted a penalty after going down under pressure from David Hancko inside the area. The composed finish handed Arsenal a crucial advantage heading into the interval.

However, Atletico responded with renewed intensity after the break and were rewarded in the 56th minute. A VAR review adjudged that the ball had struck Ben White’s arm following a deflection off his leg, leading to a penalty which Julian Alvarez dispatched emphatically into the top corner.

The contest remained finely balanced, with both sides creating opportunities. Ademola Lookman tested David Raya early in the second half, while Gabriel Magalhaes produced a crucial block to deny Antoine Griezmann, who later struck the crossbar as Atletico pushed for a winner.

Arsenal thought they had a late chance to reclaim the lead when substitute Eberechi Eze was initially awarded a penalty after appearing to beat Hancko to the ball. However, the decision was overturned following another VAR intervention, denying the Gunners a potential decisive moment.

Arsenal Show Defensive Resolve

Mikel Arteta’s side demonstrated resilience throughout the encounter, particularly under sustained pressure in the second half. While their attacking play lacked fluency at times, their defensive organisation ensured they remained competitive.

Gyokeres impressed leading the line, showing composure from the penalty spot and providing a focal point in attack. Meanwhile, Raya delivered several important saves to keep Arsenal level during Atletico’s dominant spells.

Although there may be frustration over the penalty awarded against them, Arsenal will take encouragement from returning to London on level terms, with home advantage in the decisive second leg.

Alvarez Underlines His Quality

For Atletico, Alvarez delivered a standout performance that reinforced his growing reputation among Europe’s elite clubs. The Argentine forward was a constant threat, combining sharp movement with technical quality.

He created Atletico’s first meaningful chance with intelligent play on the edge of the box and later tested Raya with a long-range free-kick. His penalty finish was struck with precision and power, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Having only recently returned from injury, Alvarez’s influence was significant, although he was later withdrawn after appearing to pick up another knock, something Atletico will monitor closely ahead of the return leg.

With the tie delicately balanced, both teams now turn their focus to next week’s second leg in London, where a place in the Champions League final will be decided.
