UCL: PSG outclass Liverpool to seize control of Champions League quarter-final tie
Liverpool’s hopes of progressing in the UEFA Champions League hang in the balance after a comprehensive defeat to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, Sport360NG reports.
The Premier League side, who have now suffered their 16th defeat of the season, were second best throughout in the French capital as PSG delivered a dominant performance.
The hosts took an early lead when Desire Doue’s effort from the edge of the box took a heavy deflection off Virgil van Dijk, looping beyond goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia later doubled the advantage with a composed finish after rounding the goalkeeper, following a precise through ball from Joao Neves.
Liverpool struggled to impose themselves on the contest and failed to register a single shot on target, leaving them with a significant task ahead of the return leg at Anfield next week.
Still reeling from a heavy defeat to Manchester City in their previous outing, Arne Slot’s side adopted a cautious approach with a five-man defensive setup. However, PSG’s relentless pressure quickly exposed their vulnerabilities.
Mamardashvili, deputising for the injured Alisson Becker, produced several key saves to prevent further damage, including a fine stop to deny Kvaratskhelia and another to keep out Doue. Despite his efforts, Liverpool’s defence was repeatedly breached by a vibrant PSG attack.
The visitors were fortunate not to concede a third goal after a penalty initially awarded against Ibrahima Konate was overturned following a VAR review. Ousmane Dembele also missed multiple clear chances, further underlining PSG’s dominance.
Liverpool introduced Alexander Isak late on for his first appearance since December, but the move offered little impact as the French champions comfortably saw out the match.
The result leaves Liverpool facing a daunting challenge in the second leg, although the club will draw on its history of memorable European comebacks at Anfield.
For PSG, the performance highlighted their growing momentum as they continue their title defence. Luis Enrique’s side controlled proceedings from the outset and extended their impressive record against English opposition in recent seasons.
Despite their superiority, PSG may reflect on missed opportunities to extend their lead further, leaving the tie still mathematically open ahead of the decisive encounter in England.
