UCL: Atletico Madrid edge Barcelona to reach semi-finals despite second-leg defeat

Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after withstanding a spirited Barcelona comeback, progressing 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 defeat in the second leg in Madrid, Sport360NG reports.

Barcelona, trailing 2-0 from the first leg, made a blistering start to the return fixture. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal pulled one back early, capitalising on a defensive error to slot past goalkeeper Juan Musso.

The visitors levelled the tie inside 25 minutes when Ferran Torres connected with a precise pass from Dani Olmo, firing a superb effort into the top corner to make it 2-2 on aggregate.

Lookman Strikes Decisive Blow

Barcelona’s momentum was halted midway through the first half as Atletico responded. Marcos Llorente surged down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross for Ademola Lookman, who finished calmly to restore Atletico’s aggregate advantage and ignite the home crowd.

Barcelona had opportunities to take full control of the tie earlier, most notably when Fermin Lopez was denied by Musso from close range with the score still in their favour on the night.

VAR and Red Card Turn the Tide

The Catalan side thought they had moved ahead again early in the second half when Torres volleyed home, but the effort was disallowed following a VAR review for offside.

Their task became even more difficult when Eric Garcia was sent off for bringing down Alexander Sorloth as the Atletico striker raced through on goal, reducing Barcelona to 10 men for the second leg running.

Despite late pressure, including headed chances from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo, Barcelona were unable to complete a dramatic turnaround.

Simeone’s Tactical Discipline Pays Off

Atletico’s progression owed much to their discipline and resilience under head coach Diego Simeone. Despite conceding twice early on, the hosts remained composed and stuck to a strategy built on quick transitions and defensive organisation.

The atmosphere at the Estadio Metropolitano played a key role, with supporters creating an intense environment that spurred the team on. A pre-match message urging players to “fight for your shirt” was reflected in their determined performance.

While Atletico benefited from Barcelona’s red card, they also created chances of their own, with opportunities falling to players including Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez.

Semi-Final Await and History Beckons

Atletico Madrid will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals as they aim to reach their first Champions League final since 2016.

Having twice fallen short in previous finals, Simeone’s side will hope this campaign finally delivers European glory.
