UCL: Atletico Madrid punish 10-man Barcelona to seize Champions League first-leg advantage
Atletico Madrid moved within touching distance of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after securing a commanding first-leg victory over Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Sport360NG reports.
Diego Simeone’s side, who had not tasted victory at the venue since 2006, delivered a clinical performance as goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth handed them a crucial edge in the quarter-final tie.
Barcelona began brightly and controlled large periods of the contest, but the game swung dramatically just before half-time following a decisive refereeing call. Pau Cubarsi was initially booked for bringing down Giuliano Simeone during a clear goal-scoring opportunity, but the decision was upgraded to a red card after referee Istvan Kovacs reviewed the incident following VAR intervention.
Atletico capitalised immediately, with Alvarez producing a sublime free-kick to break the deadlock and silence the home crowd.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Barcelona responded with determination after the restart, dominating possession and creating several opportunities. Marcus Rashford came closest to restoring parity when his powerful free-kick struck the crossbar, while the hosts continued to press for an equaliser.
However, Atletico’s efficiency proved decisive. With Barcelona pushing forward, the visitors struck again as Sorloth calmly finished from Matteo Ruggeri’s low delivery to double their advantage.
The result leaves Barcelona facing a daunting task ahead of the second leg in Madrid next Tuesday.
Wasteful Barcelona Left to Regret Missed Chances
Barcelona entered the encounter in strong form, having won eight and drawn one of their previous nine matches across all competitions, including a recent La Liga victory over Atletico.
That confidence was evident in their attacking intent, as they registered 24 attempts on goal. Rashford tested the goalkeeper on multiple occasions, while another effort was ruled out for offside involving Lamine Yamal.
However, their inability to convert chances proved costly, particularly during the crucial moments before the interval when Cubarsi’s dismissal and Alvarez’s goal shifted the momentum.
Atletico, in contrast, adopted a disciplined and pragmatic approach after taking the lead. Content to sit deep and absorb pressure, they made the most of limited opportunities, scoring twice from just three shots on target.
Having previously eliminated Barcelona in two Champions League knockout ties, Atletico will head into the return leg with confidence. Meanwhile, Hansi Flick’s side must produce a near-perfect performance in Madrid to overturn the deficit and keep their European hopes alive.
