Nigerian Discus Star Amaechi Sets Sights on Global Medal

Nigerian discus thrower, Obiageri Amaechi, says her main focus is on achieving consistency as she intensifies preparations for the World Athletics Championships scheduled for September in Tokyo, Japan, Sport360NG reports.

The 26-year-old, who was born in the United States, booked her place at the global event after recording an impressive 64.80m throw at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona. She now hopes to translate that form into a podium finish when the competition begins.

Speaking about her recent performances, Amaechi expressed optimism about her progress.
“I feel really good about the mark I achieved. It feels like a turning point for me and an indication of what lies ahead,” she said. “This season, the priority has been working on executing my technical cues consistently, and I’m eager to build on this momentum. If I can keep hitting the right positions, I believe I’ll consistently reach 60 meters. That’s the target for Tokyo, and I’m praying it comes through.”

Since pledging her international future to Nigeria in 2022, Amaechi has steadily established herself among the nation’s top field athletes, competing alongside African record holder Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons.

Her medal haul already includes gold at the 2023 African Games, bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, another bronze at the 2022 African Championships, and participation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
