Palmer Stars as Chelsea thrash PSG to Win Club World Cup

Cole Palmer produced a masterclass performance to guide Chelsea to a dominant 3-0 victory over European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The 23-year-old England international struck twice in the first half and provided a sublime assist for Joao Pedro, sealing a historic triumph for the Premier League side in front of a record crowd of 81,118 spectators.

Palmer opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a precise low drive after Malo Gusto had exploited space behind Nuno Mendes. He doubled Chelsea’s lead just eight minutes later, deceiving the PSG defence with a clever feint before firing in an identical effort from the edge of the area.

Shortly before the interval, Palmer capped off a breathtaking individual display with a perfectly weighted through ball to new signing Joao Pedro, who lobbed Gianluigi Donnarumma to make it 3-0.

PSG, tipped as favourites ahead of the final, struggled to recover. Although Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele tested Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez early in the second half, the Ligue 1 side failed to convert their few chances, including first-half misses from Joao Neves and Desire Doue.

Their frustrations boiled over late on when Neves was dismissed following a VAR review for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair, reducing PSG to ten men. Tensions further escalated after the final whistle, with Paris manager Luis Enrique caught in an apparent altercation with Chelsea’s Joao Pedro. Video footage showed Enrique raising his hand toward the forward before being restrained by substitute Presnel Kimpembe.

Enrique later defended his actions, stating he was trying to break up a potential brawl: “It was the result of end-of-match pressure. I was preventing the situation from escalating.”

Also watching from the stands was US President Donald Trump, seated alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, as Chelsea capped off the tournament with approximately £90 million in prize money.

Palmer the Face of Chelsea’s Revival

Palmer, already one of the most marketable players in Chelsea’s squad, firmly cemented his status as the club’s new talisman. His image has been emblazoned across billboards in Times Square, and he recently featured in a promotional campaign alongside Ballon d’Or contender Dembele.

Following Chelsea’s UEFA Europa Conference League title earlier this year, this victory marks a further step forward for manager Enzo Maresca and the club’s Clearlake Capital-led ownership, validating their heavy investment in the squad.

PSG’s Collapse Raises Questions

Despite a stellar season that saw them lift the Champions League and multiple domestic trophies, PSG looked uncharacteristically disjointed. Their lack of control and composure throughout the final will raise questions for Enrique, especially given the chaotic scenes after the match.

PSG entered the game having defeated the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa en route to the title, but were completely outclassed on the night by a resurgent Chelsea side.

Standout Performances Across the Board

Chelsea’s collective display was one of their best in recent memory. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was outstanding, making crucial stops to deny Dembele and Kvaratskhelia. Malo Gusto impressed with his overlapping runs and defensive work, while Pedro Neto worked tirelessly to contain Achraf Hakimi.

Joao Pedro, meanwhile, continued his fine start at Chelsea, scoring his third goal in as many appearances since his mid-tournament arrival.

What Comes Next

Chelsea players will now enjoy a brief three-week break before returning for a pre-season mini-tournament at Stamford Bridge, where they’ll face Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan on 8 and 10 August, respectively. Their Premier League campaign kicks off against Crystal Palace on 17 August.

PSG, meanwhile, will regroup for the UEFA Super Cup showdown against Tottenham Hotspur on 13 August, as they aim to put this disappointing finale behind them.
