Super Falcons Set for Hero’s Welcome today in Abuja After Historic WAFCON Triumph

Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons are expected to arrive in Abuja today (Monday) for a celebratory parade and a reception with President Bola Tinubu, following their dramatic win over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced that the team, who clinched their 10th continental title on Saturday with a thrilling 3–2 comeback against hosts Morocco in Rabat, will land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by midday.

To mark their record-extending feat, the Falcons will be honoured with an open-top bus parade through major parts of the capital, offering fans an opportunity to celebrate with the team. The victory procession is expected to pass through Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, and Wuse Market before heading to the Presidential Villa.

“We’re organizing a trophy parade for the players and coaching staff in an open-roof bus, traversing key areas of Abuja,” NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said in a statement. “It’s a chance for the public to witness the AFCON trophy up close and celebrate with our champions.”

President Tinubu, who spoke with the team via video call on Sunday, expressed his excitement and pledged a grand reception for the squad. “You’ve made the nation proud. Your victory has lifted our spirits, and we are eager to celebrate you,” Tinubu said. “This historic 10th title is a remarkable achievement for Nigeria and Africa. We look forward to welcoming you home safely.”

During the call, team captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked the President for authorizing the payment of the players’ bonuses and promised to personally present the trophy at the Villa. “Good,” Tinubu replied, “I’m looking forward to that moment.”

Saturday’s triumph adds to Nigeria’s decorated history in the competition, with previous WAFCON titles won in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
