Ronaldo cleared to start Portugal’s 2026 world cup campaign after partial suspension

Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for the start of Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign after FIFA confirmed that his recent disciplinary sanction will not fully carry into next year’s tournament, Sport360NG reports.

The Portuguese captain received a three-match suspension from FIFA’s disciplinary committee following his red card against the Republic of Ireland earlier this month, when he was sent off for elbowing defender Dara O’Shea in a World Cup qualifier.

However, only one match of the suspension is set to be enforced immediately. Ronaldo has already served that game during Portugal’s final qualifier against Armenia. The remaining two matches have been conditionally suspended for one year under a probation arrangement.

According to FIFA, the suspended portion of the punishment will be activated only if Ronaldo commits a similar offence during the probation period. Should that happen, the two additional matches would be applied to Portugal’s next official fixtures, which would include the opening group games of the 2026 World Cup.

“In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the serving of the two remaining matches has been suspended under a one-year probation period,” FIFA said. “If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during that period, the suspension will be automatically reinstated and must be served in the next official matches.”

The governing body added that the ruling does not prevent further sanctions if another offence occurs. The decision is also subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.

The outcome ensures that the 40-year-old forward remains eligible for Portugal’s opening match at next year’s World Cup, barring any future disciplinary incidents.
