Osaka’s jellyfish-inspired entrance steals spotlight as she advances in Melbourne

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka once again blended fashion and performance at the Australian Open, turning heads with a striking jellyfish-inspired outfit before backing it up with a hard-fought first-round victory, Sport360NG reports.

Osaka made a dramatic entrance onto Rod Laver Arena ahead of her opening match against Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic, wearing an ocean-blue tie-dye tracksuit jacket paired with flowing white wide-leg bottoms, both accented with ruffled detailing.

The 16th seed, a two-time Australian Open champion, later overcame Ruzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to book a place in the second round.

Tennis correspondent Russell Fuller described the moment on BBC Radio 5 Live as “the most spectacular and breathtaking entrance to a Grand Slam first round” he had witnessed.

Osaka revealed that the look was inspired by a jellyfish she came across while reading to her two-year-old daughter, Shai, and that sportswear giant Nike allowed her to take a hands-on role in designing the outfit.

“I’m so grateful I get to do the things that I love,” Osaka said. “It’s really beautiful.”

The design was brought to life by London-based fashion designer Robert Wun, who has previously styled global music stars. The ensemble also featured two white butterflies, one on her wide-brimmed hat and another on her umbrella, an apparent nod to her 2021 Australian Open triumph, when a butterfly famously landed on her during a match.

On court, the former world number one endured a stern test from Ruzic, who was playing on her 23rd birthday. After slipping 4-3 behind in the deciding set, Osaka responded immediately, breaking back and closing out the match with two commanding games.

Former world number six Chanda Rubin noted that while the outfit made a statement, Osaka’s tennis ultimately delivered the final word.

Osaka will next face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, who advanced after a three-set win over Germany’s Eva Lys in the opening round.
