Dan Evans Stuns Tiafoe with Vintage Display at Queen’s

Dan Evans produced one of the standout performances of his career as he defeated world number 13 Frances Tiafoe in straight sets to reach the last 16 at the Queen’s Club Championships. The 35-year-old Brit, who entered the tournament as a wildcard, showcased a brilliant blend of tactical guile and composure to secure a 7-5, 6-2 win — his first victory over a top-20 player since the 2023 Davis Cup.

The win also marked just his second ever triumph against a top-20 opponent on grass, the first coming at Wimbledon six years ago against Nikoloz Basilashvili. Evans will now face either American Brandon Nakashima or France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round as he continues his climb back up the ATP rankings from a current position of 199th.

Reigniting Form and Paying Tribute

Evans’ recent ranking drop stemmed in part from his decision to focus on doubles at the 2023 Paris Olympics, where he partnered with Andy Murray. Fittingly, this career-best singles performance came in the newly renamed Andy Murray Arena at Queen’s — a venue now honouring the former world number one.

Reflecting on his Olympic experience and the impact of Murray, Evans said:

“The Olympics was one of the best things I’ve done. It’s something that will stay with me forever. Playing with Andy was a privilege, and he continues to inspire not just me but everyone in British tennis.”

Evans was sharp from the outset, fending off early pressure and breaking Tiafoe midway through the opening set. Though the American briefly responded, a tense 37-shot rally won by Evans proved pivotal in swinging momentum his way. From there, he raced into a commanding position in the second set, benefitting from a timely net cord at 3-1 before closing out the match to a rousing ovation.

“Days like today are why I’ve kept going,” Evans said. “It was probably one of the best matches I’ve ever played. I just let go and played freely.”

Mensik Outguns Norrie in Three-Set Battle

While Evans thrived, fellow Brit Cameron Norrie fell short in his opening match, bowing out to rising Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in a three-set encounter. The 19-year-old prevailed 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-1 under sweltering conditions, becoming just the second teenager in the past decade to win a main-draw match at Queen’s, following Jack Draper’s feat in 2021.

Norrie, a finalist at the tournament in 2021, had opportunities to take control but failed to convert two set points in the first-set tiebreak. Although he dominated the second set to level the match, Mensik recovered brilliantly in the decider — saving break points early before breaking Norrie twice to seal the upset with his 19th ace of the match.

“He served unbelievably well,” Norrie said post-match. “I felt I was the better player in the first two sets, but in the third, I didn’t serve well enough and he took his chances.”

Norrie now turns his attention to doubles and will look to regain form ahead of his singles campaign at Eastbourne next week.
