Ogbu Eyes Champions League Glory After Extending Slavia Prague Stay

Nigeria international Igoh Ogbu says the desire to lift trophies and compete in the UEFA Champions League was central to his decision to sign a new contract with Slavia Prague, keeping him at the Czech club until 2027.

Despite interest from multiple European clubs, the 25-year-old centre-back chose to remain with Slavia, where he has become a defensive mainstay since joining from Lillestrøm in January 2023.

Speaking to the club’s official media, Ogbu said he opted for continuity because of the trust, familiarity, and ambition within the club.

“Extending my contract is the best decision because I understand the system and the philosophy here,” Ogbu said. “The chance to play in the Champions League — something I’ve always dreamed of — made it an easy choice to stay longer before making the next move in my career.”

From Gombe to Prague: A Steady Rise
Ogbu featured in 34 matches for Slavia last season, contributing two goals and an assist, and has cemented his role as a key figure in their defensive setup.

The former Gombe United youth product began his European journey with Norwegian side Rosenborg, including loan stints at Levanger and Sogndal. He later joined Sogndal on a permanent deal before signing a five-year contract with Lillestrøm, where his strong performances paved the way for a move to Slavia.

His contract extension, confirmed on June 25, 2025, reflects both Slavia’s confidence in his abilities and Ogbu’s commitment to continued growth at a competitive European level.

On the international scene, Ogbu represented Nigeria at the 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He finally made his senior Super Eagles debut in May 2025 during the Unity Cup and is tipped as a rising force in Nigeria’s defensive ranks.
