Beyond Limits Crowned Gothia Cup U17 Champions After Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Nigerian side Beyond Limits have emerged victorious in the B17 Elite category of the Gothia Cup 2025, overcoming Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas in a tense final decided by penalties on Saturday.

In a gripping contest between two technically gifted teams, the match ended 1-1 after regulation time before Beyond Limits edged their West African rivals in an eight-round shootout to lift the prestigious youth title.

ASEC made a fast start and took the lead just five minutes into the match through a spectacular acrobatic strike from Emile Emmanuel Zongo. But Beyond Limits showed composure and grit, levelling the score midway through the first half after a goalmouth scramble saw the ball forced over the line.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, but resolute defending and missed chances meant neither team could break the deadlock, sending the final into a penalty shootout.

The spot kicks delivered high drama. Beyond Limits thought they had sealed the win after the fifth round, only for the ASEC goalkeeper to pull off a crucial save and extend the contest. But it was the Nigerian team who held their nerve in the eighth round, converting their effort while ASEC faltered, sparking scenes of jubilation among players and fans.

Emmanuel Adeboyejo, who was named the final’s Most Valuable Player, expressed his delight after the nail-biting conclusion.

“I feel amazing and so relieved after that dramatic shootout,” he said. “We’ve played as a united team throughout this tournament and truly earned this title.”

The victory marks a historic moment for Beyond Limits, who are set to return home to celebrations, though with a sense of reflection and pride in what is considered one of the world’s premier youth football tournaments.
