Luis Díaz scores on debut as Bayern lift German Super Cup
Luis Díaz marked his Bayern Munich debut with a goal as the Bundesliga champions defeated Stuttgart to claim the German Super Cup, with Harry Kane also on target, Sport360NG reports.
Díaz, a £65.5m summer signing from Liverpool, secured a dream start to life in Germany by heading in Serge Gnabry’s cross 13 minutes from time to make it 2-0.
Kane had earlier put Vincent Kompany’s side ahead in the first half, capitalising on a defensive error to steer a low finish into the corner. Stuttgart, winners of last season’s German Cup, reduced the deficit deep into stoppage time through Jamie Leweling, but it came too late to threaten Bayern’s victory.
After scoring, Díaz paid tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July along with his brother André Silva, by imitating one of the Portuguese forward’s trademark celebrations.
The win extends Bayern’s record to 11 German Super Cup triumphs, while Kane collects his second piece of silverware in Germany following last season’s breakthrough trophy.
Bayern, who returned to the top of the Bundesliga under Kompany after missing out in 2024, begin their title defence against RB Leipzig on 22 August.
