The National Sports Commission has hailed 17-year-old Abduljabar Adama after the teenage swimmer etched his name into history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever medal at a global swimming competition, Sport360NG reports.

Adama clinched silver in the men’s 50m butterfly on Saturday at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Romania, finishing in 23.64 seconds, just 0.10s behind Britain’s Dean Fearn, who took gold. Czech swimmer Jan Foltyn claimed bronze, touching the wall one-hundredth of a second behind Adama.

The youngster’s performance capped a remarkable week in which he twice lowered his own national record. He clocked 23.61s in Friday’s heats before improving further with 23.48s in the semifinals. His previous record of 23.81s was set earlier this year at the British Swimming Championships.

In a statement posted on X, the Sports Commission praised Adama’s landmark achievement:

“The National Sports Commission celebrates Abduljabar Adama for winning silver in the men’s 50m butterfly at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Romania, a feat unprecedented in Nigeria’s swimming history.”

Discovered at the National Youth Games, Adama was awarded a scholarship to continue his development in London. He returned home in May to compete at the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, underlining his growing influence in Nigerian swimming.

Nigeria’s team in Romania also included six other young swimmers, Ayobami Akindele, Omotola Akinsanmi, Aidan Dumeji-Abili, Angelo Nnaji, Kashope Obatoyinbo, and Omolola Akindele, though it was Adama who delivered the country’s breakthrough moment on the world stage.

Earlier this year, the teenager also made headlines at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, where he won three gold medals and a bronze, set a new African junior record in the 50m freestyle, and broke the championship record in the 50m butterfly. His dominance earned him the award for Best Male Swimmer of the tournament.
