Onyeka eyes promotion push as Coventry seek to end easter hoodoo at Hull
Fresh from his stunning strike on Good Friday, Frank Onyeka will be aiming to maintain his fine form as Coventry City travel to the MKM Stadium in a crucial Championship encounter, Sport360NG reports.
The Nigerian midfielder opened the scoring in Coventry’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Derby County, a result that extended their lead at the top of the table. The Sky Blues now sit 11 points clear of second-placed Millwall, while Ipswich Town, 14 points adrift, still have two games in hand.
With momentum firmly on their side, Coventry require just eight points from their remaining six fixtures to seal promotion to the Premier League.
However, Mark Robins’ side face a historical challenge heading into the Easter Monday clash. Coventry have endured a poor record on this date, winning just one of their last 20 matches played on Easter Monday, a 2021 victory over Bristol City. Their last away win on this occasion dates back to 1994, with only four draws recorded in 14 such fixtures since then.
Despite that trend, Coventry arrive in strong form, having secured eight wins from their last nine league matches. Their only setback in that run came against Southampton. They have also been impressive on the road, winning their last four away games against West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, Bristol City and Swansea City, and are now chasing a club-record six consecutive away victories.
Recent meetings between Coventry and Hull City suggest another closely contested affair, with four of the last six encounters ending in draws. Matches at the MKM Stadium this season have also been high-scoring, with Hull both scoring and conceding 32 goals in 20 home games. Notably, each of their last five Championship fixtures at the venue has produced at least four goals.
Coventry’s attacking strength on the road has been a key factor in their success, with 41 goals scored away from home this season, the highest tally in the division and seven more than any other side.
As the promotion race intensifies, Onyeka and his teammates will be determined to defy history and take another decisive step towards a Premier League return.
