Onyeka nets first club goal in two years as Coventry beat Derby in thriller
Nigeria international Frank Onyeka netted his first club goal in two years to inspire Coventry City to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Derby County, tightening their hold at the top of the Championship on Friday, Sport360NG reports.
Onyeka opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a superb finish, meeting a pass inside the box before firing a first-time effort that sailed over the goalkeeper into the far top corner, igniting celebrations at the CBS Arena.
The strike marked his first goal for Coventry and his first at club level since March 2024, when he found the net for Brentford against Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Derby County responded before the interval, with Ben Brereton Diaz scoring twice to turn the game on its head. However, Coventry mounted a strong second-half comeback to claim all three points in an enthralling encounter.
Onyeka’s goal ended a lengthy drought spanning 55 matches across spells with Brentford, Augsburg and Coventry, featuring in competitions including the Premier League, Bundesliga, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, DFB Pokal and the Championship.
Despite his limited goal return at club level, the midfielder has remained effective for Nigeria, scoring in key fixtures including a World Cup qualifying win over Benin in October 2025 and a playoff draw against DR Congo the following month.
Primarily deployed in a defensive midfield role, Onyeka has been tasked with shielding the backline and disrupting opposition play under manager Frank Lampard, rather than contributing goals.
His impact has nonetheless been crucial in Coventry’s promotion push, with consistent displays forming a key part of the club’s impressive campaign.
Since arriving on loan from Brentford, the 27-year-old has made nine Championship appearances, starting eight and averaging 71 minutes per match.
He has also delivered solid defensive numbers, averaging 1.4 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.6 ball recoveries per game, while contributing effectively in duels and transitions.
The win lifts Coventry to 83 points from 40 matches, opening up a nine-point gap over second-placed Millwall with six games remaining.
They are now within touching distance of promotion and could seal a return to the Premier League when they host Sheffield Wednesday on April 11.
Onyeka’s loan deal includes an option for a permanent transfer if Coventry secure promotion, and his timely return to the scoresheet could prove pivotal in the club’s push for top-flight football.
