Adepoju backs Iheanacho for Super Eagles recall after Celtic resurgence

Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has thrown his support behind Kelechi Iheanacho for a return to the Super Eagles, pointing to the striker’s improving form at Celtic FC despite an injury-hit season, Sport360NG reports.

Iheanacho, who arrived at the Scottish champions last summer, has struggled with persistent hamstring issues that have restricted his involvement. However, the 29-year-old has still recorded six goals and one assist in 18 appearances for the Hoops.

The forward’s recent displays have reignited debate over his international future, particularly after a standout performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren FC, where he netted twice in extra time to seal victory.

Adepoju believes Iheanacho’s pedigree and experience remain important assets, adding that his current form could justify a recall if he maintains his momentum.

“Kelechi has always been a very good player and a reliable scorer who has delivered consistently over the years. It’s unfortunate that recent seasons have been difficult for him,” Adepoju said.

He expressed optimism about the striker’s revival at Celtic, noting that it reflects a positive upward trend.

“I’m pleased to see him regaining form at Celtic, and I believe he can sustain this level and continue improving,” he added.

Adepoju also highlighted the value of experience within the national team, insisting Iheanacho still has the qualities required to contribute at international level.

“Experience is crucial. If he continues performing well and the national team coaches consider him deserving, he still has what it takes to return and make an impact,” he said.

Iheanacho has earned 58 caps for Nigeria and previously built a strong reputation during his time with Manchester City and Leicester City, where he established himself as a clinical finisher in decisive moments.

Although injuries have affected his consistency in recent years, his recent run of three goals in as many matches underlines his renewed sharpness in front of goal.

The striker last featured for Nigeria in May 2025 during the Unity Cup, and with the Super Eagles preparing to defend their title before facing Portugal and Poland in June, his fitness and form could be key as head coach Eric Chelle weighs up options to refresh his squad.
