Nigeria Hit by Goalkeeper Setback Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign has been dealt a setback after first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali suffered an injury while in action for his club, Chippa United, Sport360NG reports.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper was carried off on a stretcher during the first half of Tuesday’s South African league clash with Richards Bay, appearing to be in severe discomfort. Chippa United have yet to confirm the nature or severity of the problem, with medical tests still ongoing.

The timing is far from ideal for the Super Eagles, who face crucial qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa next month. Nwabali, capped 21 times, has been a consistent presence in goal and is widely seen as central to coach Eric Chelle’s plans.

His absence would deepen Nigeria’s goalkeeping concerns. Maduka Okoye is serving a two-month suspension for breaching betting regulations, while the alternatives offer little experience at international level. Amas Obasogie, currently based in Tanzania, is yet to make his debut, and Adebayo Adeleye of Greek side Volos NPS has only one cap.

There is also teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt, who caught the eye at this year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and earned a maiden senior call-up, but at just 15 years old he is unlikely to be thrown into high-pressure qualifiers.

Nigeria sit fourth in their group with seven points, six adrift of leaders South Africa. With two demanding fixtures on the horizon, the potential loss of Nwabali could prove costly in their push to keep World Cup hopes alive.
