Daryl Dike explains decision to commit international future to United States over Nigeria

West Bromwich Albion striker Daryl Dike has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to represent the United States at international level despite being eligible to play for Nigeria, Sport360NG reports.

The 24-year-old forward admitted that turning out for the Super Eagles was once his long-held ambition, revealing that he had fully expected to play for Nigeria during his formative years.

Dike said his outlook changed as his professional career gathered momentum in Major League Soccer, where he earned recognition from the United States national team.

He explained that discussions with his family played a key role in the decision, particularly after he was made aware that choosing the USA would permanently close the door on a future with Nigeria. Despite understanding the implications, Dike said he felt compelled to make the move, stressing that the final choice rested with him.

The striker also cited the intense competition within Nigeria’s attacking ranks as another consideration, noting the abundance of established and emerging forwards available to the Super Eagles.

In contrast, Dike said he was encouraged by the project and talent within the United States setup, pointing to a generation of high-profile players and a squad he believed he could grow with and contribute to meaningfully.

While committing his international future to the USA, Dike was quick to emphasise that his Nigerian heritage remains a significant part of his identity. He described himself as fortunate to be connected to both nations, adding that his roots would always matter to him regardless of his international allegiance.

Dike’s ties to Nigeria remain strong within his family, with his sister, Courtney Dike, having previously represented the country at international level.
