Sivert Bakken, who battled heart condition to return to sport, dies aged 27
Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken has died at the age of 27, just months after returning to competition and with hopes of featuring at the Winter Olympics in February, Sport360NG reports.
Bakken had resumed his career in 2024 following a two-year absence caused by myocarditis, a serious heart condition that sidelined him in 2022.
His comeback was widely celebrated within the sport. International Biathlon Union (IBU) president Olle Dahlin described Bakken’s return as a powerful source of inspiration for the biathlon community.
“Sivert’s return to biathlon after enduring significant hardship brought immense joy to the entire biathlon family and stood as a testament to his resilience and determination,” Dahlin said. “His death at such a young age is beyond comprehension, but his memory will live on forever.”
According to local media reports, Bakken was found dead in his hotel room in Lavaze, in the Italian Alps, where he was taking part in a training camp.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been publicly detailed.
