USA beat Canada in overtime thriller to claim first Olympic Hockey gold since 1980

The United States captured their first men’s Olympic ice hockey gold medal in 46 years after defeating Canada 2-1 in a dramatic overtime finale at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Sport360NG reports.

Jack Hughes sealed victory 101 seconds into sudden-death overtime, firing home the decisive goal to deliver the Americans’ first Olympic title since the iconic triumph at 1980 Winter Olympics, the historic “Miracle on Ice.” It also marked the first time the USA have won men’s Olympic hockey gold outside home soil.

The victory completed a remarkable double for the United States in Milan-Cortina, coming after the American women defeated Canada by the same 2-1 overtime scoreline earlier in the Games.

Boldy’s Brilliance Sets the Tone

After a cagey opening, Matt Boldy produced a moment of individual inspiration to give the USA the lead. Collecting the puck deep inside his own half, he lofted it beyond two defenders, powered past them to regain control, and calmly manoeuvred around Canadian netminder Jordan Binnington to finish.

Canada, who had overturned deficits in their previous two knockout matches, again found themselves chasing the game. However, they struggled to generate sustained pressure until late in the second period.

The Americans displayed resilience throughout, including a tense spell where they survived a three-on-five disadvantage with two players in the penalty box.

Canada Respond, Hellebuyck Stands Tall

Canada finally broke through in the 38th minute when Devon Toews switched play sharply to Cale Makar, who drove a clinical finish past Connor Hellebuyck.

The third period was largely dominated by the Canadians, who outshot the USA 41-26 in regulation time. Yet despite their territorial advantage, they were repeatedly denied.

Hellebuyck delivered a goalkeeping masterclass, notably producing a superb close-range stop to deny Mitch Marner. Nathan MacKinnon then missed a gilt-edged opportunity at the back post, sweeping wide with the goal at his mercy.

At the other end, Brock Faber came agonisingly close to restoring the American lead late in the second period, his powerful slap shot cannoning off the post.

Hughes Writes His Name in History

With the score locked at 1-1 after regulation, the final entered three-on-three overtime, the first time such a format had been used in an Olympic gold medal match. Under the rules, teams field three skaters plus a goalkeeper, playing sudden death without a shootout.

Chances came at both ends before Hughes, who had earlier lost a tooth during the contest, struck the decisive blow. Just 101 seconds into overtime, he buried his effort to spark wild celebrations and etch his name into American sporting folklore.

For the United States, it was a victory built on resilience, brilliance, and outstanding goalkeeping, and one that ends a 46-year wait for Olympic supremacy in men’s ice hockey.
