Bayern Munich match bundesliga record at midway mark after cologne victory

Bayern Munich have drawn level with the highest points total ever recorded at the halfway stage of a Bundesliga season after their latest league success against Koln, while also setting a new benchmark for goals scored, Sport360NG reports.

Wednesday’s 3-1 win at the RheinEnergieStadion kept Bayern unbeaten after 17 matches, with the Bavarian side recording 15 victories and two draws to reach 47 points. That tally matches the mid-season record established under Pep Guardiola during his debut campaign in Munich in 2013-14.

While the points total mirrors that historic season, the manner of Bayern’s dominance has been even more emphatic under head coach Vincent Kompany. His side have scored a remarkable 66 league goals by the halfway point, the most ever managed by a German top-flight club after 17 games and 22 more than Guardiola’s team achieved at the same stage 12 years ago.

Guardiola’s Bayern went on to secure the Bundesliga title that season with 90 points, finishing 19 clear of Borussia Dortmund and clinching the championship with seven matches to spare.

Kompany’s current side are also firmly in control of the title race, already holding an 11-point advantage over second-placed Dortmund. With the campaign only at its midpoint, Bayern may now have their sights set on the all-time Bundesliga points record of 91.

That landmark was set by the club’s treble-winning team in 2012-13 under Jupp Heynckes, a side that had accumulated five fewer points than Kompany’s Bayern at the same stage of the season.
