Uncertainty looms over Morocco’s hosting of WAFCON 2026 amid fan backlash

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) could be thrown into doubt as a growing section of Moroccan football supporters intensify calls for the country to step back from hosting Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions, Sport360NG reports.

The agitation follows controversial rulings by CAF’s Disciplinary Committee after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, decisions many Moroccan fans have condemned as unfair and prejudicial.

Anger over the verdicts has spread rapidly across social media, with supporters accusing CAF of creating a dangerous precedent that could embolden teams to abandon matches without facing meaningful sanctions. The controversy has since evolved into a broader campaign questioning Morocco’s continued role as a regular host of major African football tournaments.

Some supporters are now urging the Moroccan Football Federation and government authorities to reconsider hosting CAF events altogether, including both men’s and women’s competitions. In strongly worded messages circulating online, protesters have called for an end to Morocco serving as a fallback host for African football.

One widely shared statement read: “There should be no future hosting of African championships, whether men’s or women’s. Any national team without a regulation-standard stadium should not play on Moroccan soil. CAF must be clearly informed that Morocco is no longer a convenient solution to its accumulated problems.”

Another message added that Moroccan teams should withdraw from competitions whenever they believe they have been treated unjustly in other African countries.

The mounting pressure has raised fresh concerns about Morocco’s commitment to upcoming CAF events, with WAFCON 2026 now among the tournaments potentially affected by the unrest.

So far, neither the Moroccan Football Federation nor CAF has issued an official response. However, the growing dissatisfaction among fans is placing authorities under increasing scrutiny and casting uncertainty over Morocco’s reputation as a dependable host for African football competitions.
