“In September, the objective was survival,” he reflected. “By December, we were excited about finishing in the top five. A month ago, we were even dreaming of winning the league. Now we are focused on staying in the top five.”

He stressed that clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are all prioritising a top-four finish, underlining the scale of the challenge facing his side.
