Australia stun Argentina with last-gasp Bell try in Rugby Championship thriller
Australia pulled off a remarkable comeback in Queensland as Angus Bell crashed over for a decisive try after the final hooter to snatch a 28-24 victory over Argentina in the Rugby Championship, Sport360NG reports.
The Wallabies trailed 21-7 at the break but fought their way back, with Joseph Suaalii’s double drawing them level before Bell’s late heroics sealed the win.
Juan Cruz Mallia looked to have broken Australian hearts when his 79th-minute penalty nudged the Pumas ahead 24-21. Yet, instead of settling for a draw with a kick at goal, the hosts turned down three chances to level the score, pressing for the win. Their bravery was rewarded when Bell powered across the line to spark jubilant scenes.
“We could have taken the draw, but everyone believed we could finish the job,” said Wallabies captain Harry Wilson, who also referenced last month’s rally against South Africa. “I’m proud of the boys. We weren’t at our best, but to find a way to beat such quality opposition says a lot about the team.”
Argentina, who had arrived buoyed by a historic home win over New Zealand, looked in control after first-half tries from Bautista Delguy and Mateo Carreras, combined with three penalties from Santi Carreras. Nic White’s early score was Australia’s only reply before the interval.
The momentum shifted in the second half as Suaalii struck twice to level matters, setting up the frantic finale.
“It wasn’t a good performance from us,” admitted Argentina captain Julián Montoya. “We gave away too many controllable penalties, especially offsides, and that handed Australia territory. Congratulations to them, they took their chances.”
