German Track Cycling Championships Cut Short After Crash Injures Spectators
The final day of the German Track Cycling Championships was abruptly cancelled after a high-speed crash during the men’s keirin semi-finals resulted in several spectators being injured.
The accident occurred on the last corner of the race at the velodrome in Dudenhofen, western Germany, when two cyclists lost control and flew over the barriers at approximately 35mph, colliding with people in the stands.
Emergency services confirmed that seven spectators sustained injuries—some of them serious—with two individuals airlifted to hospital for treatment. Both riders involved in the crash suffered only minor injuries.
A significant emergency response was launched, involving two rescue helicopters, six ambulances, and a medical team on site.
Oliver Streich, spokesperson for German Cycling, said: “The safety of athletes and fans is our top priority. In light of the circumstances, halting the event was the only responsible decision. We extend our best wishes to everyone injured and hope for their swift recovery.”
Jens Hartwig, chairman of the local Dudenhofen Cycling Club, expressed his dismay over the incident: “This has been a week-long celebration of cycling here in Dudenhofen, and no one expected it to end this way. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we hope for their full and speedy recovery.”
