Havertz scores brace as Germany put seven past World Cup debutants Curacao
Germany brushed aside an early setback to begin their World Cup campaign with an emphatic victory over tournament debutants Curacao in Group E, producing a ruthless attacking display in Houston, Sport360NG reports.
The four-time world champions appeared destined for a comfortable evening after taking the lead inside six minutes, but Curacao briefly threatened an upset before Julian Nagelsmann’s side asserted their superiority to secure a commanding win.
Curacao Make History With Surprise Response
Germany made the perfect start when Felix Nmecha, once part of England’s youth setup, curled a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper for the fastest goal of the tournament so far.
Yet Curacao, the smallest nation by both area and population ever to feature at a World Cup, refused to be overawed. The Caribbean side stunned their illustrious opponents midway through the first half when Livano Comenencia struck from the edge of the area. His effort took a deflection and wrong-footed veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was making his fifth World Cup appearance at the age of 40.
The equaliser marked a historic moment for a nation of approximately 155,000 people and injected belief into the Blue Wave ranks.
Germany Regain Control Before The Break
Curacao’s confidence grew further when striker Jurgen Locadia appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after getting beyond Jonathan Tah. However, a scheduled hydration break proved timely for Germany, allowing them to regroup after a shaky spell.
The response was immediate. Increased urgency in attack saw Germany restore their advantage through Nico Schlotterbeck, who powered a near-post header into the net from Nathaniel Brown’s corner.
Nagelsmann’s men continued to press and were rewarded again deep into first-half stoppage time. Kai Havertz calmly converted from the penalty spot after Riechedly Bazoer brought down the influential Nmecha inside the area, giving Germany a comfortable cushion heading into the interval.
Second-Half Onslaught Seals Dominant Victory
Any hopes Curacao had of mounting another comeback were quickly extinguished after the restart. Just over a minute into the second half, Jamal Musiala latched onto Joshua Kimmich’s intelligent pass before firing home from a tight angle to extend Germany’s lead.
With confidence flowing, Germany began to overwhelm their opponents. Left-back Nathaniel Brown added another goal with a fierce volley after clever work from substitute Deniz Undav, whose introduction added further attacking sharpness.
Undav then got on the scoresheet himself, finishing neatly from another Kimmich assist as Germany’s relentless pressure continued to produce rewards.
The Stuttgart forward capped an impressive cameo by setting up Havertz late on, with the striker delicately lifting the ball over Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room to complete the scoring and underline Germany’s dominance.
Despite Curacao’s memorable first-half resistance and historic goal, Germany’s superior quality eventually told as the European heavyweights opened their World Cup challenge with an emphatic statement victory.
