Kane double and Bellingham brilliance fire England past Croatia in World Cup opener

England launched their World Cup campaign with an entertaining victory over Croatia in Dallas, overcoming defensive lapses with a powerful attacking display to claim three valuable points in Group L, Sport360NG reports. 

Despite surrendering the lead twice during a pulsating first half, Thomas Tuchel’s side showed enough quality going forward to emerge deserved winners and make an encouraging start to their bid for global success.

Kane Leads England’s Early Charge

The Three Lions struck first after 12 minutes when Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot. The England captain initially saw his effort saved by Dominik Livakovic, but the Croatian goalkeeper was adjudged to have moved off his line prematurely, forcing a retake.

Kane made no mistake with his second attempt after Luka Modric had brought down Noni Madueke inside the penalty area.

Croatia responded positively and drew level 10 minutes before the interval. Martin Baturina unleashed a fierce effort from distance that beat Jordan Pickford despite the goalkeeper managing to get a hand to the ball.

England regained the advantage shortly before half-time as Kane rose highest to power home Declan Rice‘s corner. The goal carried additional significance, taking the striker level with Gary Lineker‘s tally of 10 World Cup goals while also marking his 81st strike in England colours.

Croatia Refuse to Back Down

The lead lasted only a matter of minutes as Croatia once again found a way back into the contest.

Just before the interval, Ivan Perisic nodded the ball into the path of Petar Musa, who guided his finish beyond Pickford to send the teams into the dressing rooms level at 2-2.

Although Croatia demonstrated their attacking threat throughout the contest, England consistently looked the more dangerous side whenever they moved forward.

Their superiority became more evident after the restart, with Tuchel’s men increasing the tempo and putting sustained pressure on Zlatko Dalic’s team.

Bellingham and Rashford Seal Victory

England restored their lead almost immediately after the break through Jude Bellingham. Selected ahead of Morgan Rogers, the midfielder justified his manager’s faith with a powerful run and clinical finish that underlined his growing importance to the national team.

The goal sparked England’s best spell of the match, with Croatia struggling to cope as wave after wave of attacks poured forward.

Substitute Marcus Rashford eventually put the result beyond doubt five minutes from time, calmly finishing to cap an impressive team performance and secure a 4-2 triumph.

The victory leaves England in a strong position ahead of their next Group L encounter against Ghana in Boston.

Tuchel Encouraged Despite Defensive Concerns

While Tuchel will be pleased to open the tournament with a win, the German coach is likely to view the performance as one containing both positives and areas requiring improvement.

England’s attacking unit looked sharp and clinical, with Kane, Bellingham and Rashford all making decisive contributions. Kane also joined the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland among the early contenders in the race for the Golden Boot.

However, England’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed on several occasions, with Croatia capitalising on lapses that could have been avoided.

Nevertheless, the overall performance reflected England’s superiority, particularly during the second half when they seized control of proceedings.

Difficult Day for Modric

For Croatia captain Luka Modric, the match proved a frustrating outing.

The veteran midfielder, who inspired his country to the 2018 World Cup final and the semi-finals four years later, endured a rare difficult evening. His mistimed challenge on Madueke led to England’s opening penalty, and he was withdrawn shortly before the hour mark as Croatia struggled to contain England’s growing influence.

Despite the disappointment, Modric remains central to Croatia’s ambitions and will continue to be a key figure as they seek another deep run in the competition.

For now, though, Dalic’s side must regroup quickly after a defeat that leaves them with little room for error in the remaining group-stage fixtures.
