Arsenal Prioritise Rodrygo in Summer Transfer Plans, Keep Tabs on Lookman as Alternative
Arsenal have identified Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as their top transfer target this summer, even as they maintain interest in Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, according to Sport360 Nigeria.
Reports from Arsenal News suggest that while the Brazilian is not actively seeking a move away from the Bernabéu, the Gunners are hopeful they can tempt him with a new challenge—albeit for less than the £78m valuation reportedly set by Madrid.
Despite their focus on Rodrygo, Arsenal continue to monitor Lookman’s situation at Atalanta and are prepared to switch attention to the Super Eagles star if a deal for the Brazilian falls through. Italian outlet Corriere della Sera indicates that the North London side are ready to offer around £43m, including add-ons, for the versatile forward. However, Atalanta are said to be holding out for a fee closer to £52m, as reported by Goal.
“From our perspective, Lookman remains a viable option for Arsenal should Rodrygo remain at Madrid,” Arsenal News stated. “Although he’s often deployed as a secondary striker at Atalanta, he has a natural inclination for the left wing, where he frequently cuts inside. Given his versatility and output, £43m would be a reasonable investment.”
Lookman, who joined Atalanta in 2022, has enjoyed a resurgence in Italy. Across 118 appearances, he has racked up 52 goals and 25 assists. The 2024/25 season was his most productive yet, contributing 20 goals and seven assists across all competitions.
He also played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph in the 2022/23 season.
A return to England would mark a full-circle moment for Lookman, who previously featured for Charlton Athletic, Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. While his time in the Premier League yielded just 11 goals in 96 appearances, his recent form suggests he is hitting his peak.
As Arsenal look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new campaign, the decision between Rodrygo and Lookman could come down to valuation—and availability.
