Luis Enrique Embraces ‘Special’ Real Madrid Clash, Sidesteps Mbappe Reunion Talk
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has described his team’s upcoming Club World Cup semi-final against Real Madrid as a “special” encounter, but chose not to dwell on his past with former PSG star Kylian Mbappe ahead of their reunion.
Speaking to the media at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the highly anticipated clash will be staged, Enrique acknowledged the significance of facing the reigning Spanish giants.
“Matches against Real Madrid always carry extra meaning,” he said during Tuesday’s press conference. “Reaching this stage is a testament to the work we’ve done so far, and we’re thrilled to be involved in a game of this magnitude.”
PSG are competing in the tournament fresh off their maiden UEFA Champions League triumph — a milestone achieved just months after Mbappe’s transfer to Real Madrid. The France captain spent his final season at PSG under Enrique in a campaign marked by tension, including a brief exclusion from the squad over a contract dispute.
When asked about his relationship with Mbappe, Enrique was quick to shut down any controversy: “That’s all in the past. What matters now is the match ahead.”
The Spanish tactician emphasized the importance of staying focused as PSG eye another major title to cap an already successful season.
“This is a semi-final — we’re close to another final, and that should be all the motivation we need,” he added. PSG will be without defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, both suspended after being sent off in their quarter-final victory over Bayern Munich.
While PSG chase more silverware, Real Madrid head into the tie under new leadership, with former midfield star Xabi Alonso now at the helm. The game marks one of Alonso’s first high-profile tests as manager.
“It’s hard to judge Real just yet with Xabi newly in charge,” Enrique noted. “But he’s well-equipped for the challenge. Facing Madrid is always a pleasure — they’re the most successful club in world football.”
Alonso was unavailable for pre-match media duties after Real’s travel from Florida was delayed by storms.
The winner of Wednesday night’s semi-final will advance to Sunday’s final, where Chelsea await following their 2-0 win over Fluminense in the other semi-final.
