Atletico Madrid Reach Agreement to Sign World Cup Winner Thiago Almada
Atletico Madrid have confirmed they have reached a deal with Brazilian club Botafogo for the signing of Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada, subject to a medical and the finalisation of personal terms.
The Spanish club made the announcement on Tuesday, stating that the transfer would be completed once the 24-year-old successfully undergoes medical examinations and signs his contract.
Almada, a member of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, spent the second half of last season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lyon, where he contributed two goals and five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.
The right-footed playmaker, who has earned 10 international caps, also featured for Argentina at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He began his professional career at Vélez Sarsfield, making his senior debut at just 17 in 2018.
In 2022, Almada moved to Major League Soccer, joining Atlanta United. His standout performances earned him the league’s Best Newcomer award in his debut season.
Following his success in the MLS, Almada joined Botafogo last summer. He went on to help the club claim both the Brazilian Serie A title and the Copa Libertadores, making 26 appearances before securing a temporary switch to Lyon in January.
