Coaches Back Super Falcons to Improve and Challenge for 10th WAFCON Title

Despite an underwhelming group-stage campaign at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), several Nigerian coaches believe the Super Falcons have what it takes to go all the way and secure a record-extending 10th continental crown.

Led by head coach Justine Madugu, the Falcons secured qualification to the quarter-finals with a game to spare. However, their performances have left many fans questioning whether the team has enough quality and cohesion to lift the trophy.

Nigeria began their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Tunisia, but their displays have since dipped. A narrow 1-0 victory over Botswana—secured by a late strike from Chiwendu Ihezuo—was followed by a disappointing goalless draw against Algeria.

Ahead of Friday’s crucial quarter-final clash with Zambia—a team that defeated Nigeria in the 2022 third-place playoff—calls have grown louder from fans and former internationals for the team to raise their game. But some coaches are urging patience and perspective.

Former assistant coach of the Falcons, Mansur Abdullahi, defended Madugu’s tactical approach and urged fans to stay supportive.

“The team’s performance isn’t poor. Let’s not forget that under Randy Waldrum, we didn’t win the last WAFCON. The priority now is for the team to return with something tangible,” Abdullahi told Sport360NG. “Sometimes teams don’t perform at their peak during tournaments but still get results. I believe this team can go far.”

His views were echoed by Wemimo Matthew, head coach of Remo Stars Ladies, who commended the players’ efforts.

“No player steps onto the pitch intending to underperform,” she said. “From my perspective, they’ve done well—two wins and a draw from three matches is commendable. The players and coaches deserve credit, and I believe they will overcome Zambia.”

Former Falcons head coach Edwin Okon also offered a pragmatic take on the situation.

“It’s encouraging to see the team advancing,” he said. “Every match is different, regardless of past outcomes. The players understand what’s on the line, and I trust the coaching staff to make the right decisions moving forward.”

Nigeria remains the dominant force in WAFCON history, having claimed nine titles since the tournament assumed full-scale status in 1998. The Falcons have never failed to reach the semi-finals and will be looking to extend that streak in their next outing.
