Arsenal Smash Transfer Record with Signing of Olivia Smith for £1M
Canada international Olivia Smith has become the most expensive signing in women’s football history after completing a sensational £1 million transfer from Liverpool to Arsenal.
The 20-year-old forward, who made her senior international debut at just 15, has penned a four-year deal with the reigning UEFA Women’s Champions League winners. Her transfer fee eclipses the previous record set earlier this year when Chelsea acquired Naomi Girma for £900,000 from San Diego Wave.
“It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,” Smith said. “I’ve always dreamed of competing for the biggest titles in England and Europe, and I’m excited to help make that happen here.”
Smith’s move continues her meteoric rise since turning professional in 2023. Liverpool had signed her from Sporting CP for just over £200,000, and the club now makes a significant profit in under 12 months.
From Rising Star to Record-Breaker
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers hailed Smith as “an exciting young player” who is set to play a major role in the team’s future. Smith delivered a strong debut season in the Women’s Super League (WSL), scoring seven goals in 20 appearances and emerging as Liverpool’s most consistent attacking force.
Her influence went beyond goals; she led her team in touches inside the opposition box (92), shots (50), and total goals across all competitions (9), including crucial strikes at Anfield and in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
Despite the managerial uncertainty at Liverpool following the sacking of Matt Beard in February, the Reds were reluctant to part with Smith. Multiple bids were rejected before Arsenal met the £1m asking price. The deal will be paid in instalments and includes a sell-on clause to benefit Liverpool in any future transfer.
A Global Talent with Limitless Potential
Smith’s journey has taken her from Whitby Iroquois SC in Ontario to stardom in Europe. After excelling in League1 Ontario and earning youth international call-ups, she made her senior debut for Canada at 15 and played in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. She was named Best Young Player at the 2024 Gold Cup after scoring her first international goal in a 6-0 rout of El Salvador.
Following a brief stint in U.S. college soccer with Penn State, she signed with Sporting CP, where her 22 goal involvements in 18 league matches earned widespread acclaim. Former coach Mariana Cabral described her as “the complete package” explosive, technical, and mentally resilient.
Arsenal believe Smith can be a long-term pillar of their squad. She brings versatility to the attack, capable of operating centrally or out wide, and is already being seen as a future global superstar.
“If she settles in well, she can be the kind of player you build a team around,” Cabral added. “She has the potential to become the best player in the world.”
