Super Falcons Visit Injured Gabriela Salgado in Hospital, Express Solidarity with Banyana Banyana
Nigeria’s Super Falcons paid a heartfelt visit to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado on Wednesday, following the winger’s serious injury during their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final encounter in Casablanca.
Salgado, who suffered a significant leg injury during the match, is currently recovering at Mohamed VI University Hospital, where members of the Nigerian squad presented her with a signed Super Falcons jersey in a gesture of empathy and support.
The visit followed an emotional reaction from the Nigerian team after Salgado was stretchered off in visible pain during Tuesday’s game. In a statement released by team media officer Mary Akinsola, the Falcons expressed deep concern for the injured player and extended their support to the entire Banyana Banyana squad.
“The entire Nigerian delegation, players, coaches, and officials was deeply saddened by the scene on the pitch,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are entirely with Gabriela as she begins her recovery. We’re sending strength to her, her loved ones, and her teammates during this difficult time.”
Highlighting the unity shared among athletes, the Super Falcons emphasised that in moments of adversity, sporting rivalries fade away.
“When injuries like this occur, the spirit of competition gives way to compassion and a shared humanity,” the team noted, revealing that several Nigerian players were visibly distressed by the incident and were eager to offer their personal support the following day.
Reaffirming their solidarity, the statement concluded: “As part of the global football community, the Super Falcons stand beside Banyana Banyana, united in support and goodwill. We wish Gabriela a smooth recovery and hope to see her return stronger when the time is right.”
Salgado underwent surgery on Wednesday for a fracture in the mid-shaft of her left leg. According to South Africa team doctor Dr Lindi Mokoena, the operation was successful and she is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year.
“Gabriela received excellent care from the medical teams of Banyana Banyana, CAF, and the hospital staff,” said Dr Mokoena, who added that the South African Football Association was fully confident in the treatment she received in Morocco.
Outpourings of support have continued from across the continent, including a message from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“Today, our thoughts are with Gabriela Salgado as we wish her comfort and a swift recovery from her injury in last night’s semi-final against Nigeria,” said Ramaphosa. “Gabriela, you are a woman of faith, courage, and skill. The entire nation stands with you.”
Salgado’s South African teammates, many of whom were shaken by the incident, also visited her at the hospital shortly after her condition was stabilised.
Meanwhile, South Africa will face Ghana in the WAFCON third-place playoff on Friday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, while Nigeria will take on hosts Morocco in Saturday’s highly anticipated final.
