The Lagos State Government has rolled out a new community-based programme aimed at tackling crime and fostering youth development across the state, Sport360NG reports.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday launched the initiative, tagged Lagos Street Soccer Star Oshodi 2025, describing it as part of a wider strategy to address the underlying factors driving crime in densely populated areas.

The project is designed to harness the appeal of sports to steer young people away from social vices, offering them meaningful engagement and alternatives to idleness or gang activity.

According to Atewogboye Adeoye, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development, the programme will create safe and structured recreational opportunities for vulnerable youths while equipping them with vital life skills.

“This initiative will instil values such as teamwork, discipline and resilience, encourage community bonding, and boost self-confidence,” Adeoye said. “It will also open up pathways for personal growth and professional opportunities through sports.”

He noted that the project reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to inclusive governance, youth empowerment and community development.

“By investing in grassroots sports, we are nurturing talent and giving our young people a sense of purpose and direction,” Adeoye added. “This is about safeguarding Lagos’ future by empowering those who will shape it.”

Key objectives of the programme include reducing youth involvement in crime, strengthening community ties, and promoting positive social values. The government expects the initiative to foster greater civic participation, build a more inclusive society, and enhance quality of life across local communities.

With the launch of Lagos Street Soccer Star Oshodi 2025, Lagos joins a growing list of cities using sports as a powerful tool for social change and youth development.
