Egor LG shine bright on opening weekend of Benin unity cup
Egor Local Government stole the spotlight on the opening weekend of the Benin Unity Cup, which kicked off on Friday in Benin City, Sport360NG reports.
Egor began their campaign with an emphatic 5–1 victory over Uhunmwode in the tournament’s curtain-raiser, witnessed by the competition’s sponsor, Senator Neda Imasuen, alongside several dignitaries, at the Crescent FC Sports Complex, Irhirhi.
In another fixture, Orhiomwon and Oredo 2 battled to a 1–1 draw in a closely fought encounter.
Oredo 1 were also awarded a walkover win after Ovia South-West failed to appear for their scheduled match.
Speaking after the games, Senator Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, described football as a thriving global industry and noted that Edo State has the potential to develop into a major force.
He praised the players for their competitive spirit and urged all participating teams to uphold the rules throughout the tournament.
The Benin Unity Cup resumes on Monday with more group-stage action.
