Lobi Stars FC: The Pride of Benue and a Pillar of Nigerian Football
Lobi Stars Football Club, fondly known as The Pride of Benue, is one of Nigeria’s most iconic football institutions, with a rich history that reflects passion, resilience, and success.
Based in Makurdi, Benue State, the club plays its home matches at the Aper Aku Stadium, a venue that has become a fortress for the team and a symbol of football excellence in the North-Central region of Nigeria.
Founded in 1981 by the Benue State Sports Council, the club has undergone several transformations, each marking a new era in its journey. Initially named Hawks of Makurdi, the club quickly grew in prominence, catching the attention of state-owned institutions.
In 1985, ownership shifted to Benue Breweries Limited, prompting a name change to Benue Breweries Limited (BBL) FC. Five years later, in 1990, the club was acquired by Lobi Bank, which rebranded it as Lobi Bank FC.
This era ushered in significant development and stability, positioning the team as a force to reckon with in Nigerian football.
The defining moment for the club came in 1999 when, under the management of Godwin Koko Uwua, they clinched the inaugural title of the Nigeria Professional League, now known as the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).
This landmark victory cemented their place in Nigerian football history and led to their final name change to Lobi Stars Football Club, a name that continues to resonate across Africa.
Lobi Stars’ trophy cabinet boasts more than league triumphs. In 2003, they claimed their first FA Cup title after defeating Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, further solidifying their reputation as a dominant team.
By the end of the 2008–2009 season, they made headlines again after a successful appeal awarded them a vital win against Rangers International FC, allowing them to close the campaign with 13 wins, 10 draws, and 15 losses.
