Fluminense’s Fabio Surpasses Peter Shilton to Set World Record for Most Competitive Appearances

Brazilian veteran goalkeeper Fábio Deivson Lopes Maciel has etched his name into football history, overtaking Peter Shilton’s long-standing mark for the most official appearances in the game, Sport360NG reports.

The 44-year-old reached his 1,391st career outing on Tuesday night as Fluminense defeated América de Cali 2–0 at the Maracanã in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, surpassing the English legend’s total.

Fábio, who began his professional career in 1997, has played exclusively in Brazil, turning out for União Bandeirante, Atlético Paranaense, Vasco da Gama, Cruzeiro, and now Fluminense. The bulk of his matches came at Cruzeiro, where he featured 976 times across 17 years. He also made 150 appearances for Vasco, 30 for União Bandeirante, and Tuesday’s fixture marked his 235th game for Fluminense.

While the Guinness World Records had credited Shilton with 1,390 appearances, the former England goalkeeper himself has disputed the total, suggesting he played 1,387. His career breakdown includes 1,249 club games, a record 125 England caps, and 13 outings for the England Under-23s, though whether those should count as senior appearances remains contested. Regardless, Fluminense now officially recognize Fábio as football’s all-time appearance leader.

Celebrations in Rio

The Rio de Janeiro club honored their captain before and after the match, with Fábio donning a commemorative shirt patch. Reflecting on the achievement, he said:

“I have to thank everyone who has been part of my journey, my parents, my family, my friends, and my wife. I try to be a good person and always help my team-mates. Without God, none of this would be possible.”

Since joining Fluminense in 2022, Fábio has added major honors to his résumé, including the 2023 Copa Libertadores title and a semi-final run at the FIFA Club World Cup, where he broke Gianluigi Buffon’s record for career clean sheets by recording his 507th shutout. He has since extended his contract until December 2026, potentially keeping him between the posts until the age of 46.

A Career of Longevity and Consistency

Despite never earning a senior Brazil cap, Fábio’s youth international career saw him lift the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Cup alongside Ronaldinho and reach the U-20 World Cup semi-finals two years later. His contemporary, Júlio César, went on to become Brazil’s first-choice keeper, but Fábio remained a domestic stalwart.

Even in his mid-40s, he shows no signs of slowing down. According to the CIES Football Observatory, he clocked an extraordinary 5,850 minutes of competitive football in the 12 months leading up to July 2024, the equivalent of 65 full matches, more than any goalkeeper has played in a single year.

Marking this milestone at the iconic Maracanã only added to the sense of occasion. In a career spanning 28 years and nearly 1,400 matches, Fábio’s story is now cemented as one of football’s greatest testaments to endurance and professionalism.
