Newcastle United complete £55m deal for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United have secured the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford in a transfer worth £55 million, Sport360NG reports.

The Democratic Republic of Congo forward, who netted 19 Premier League goals last season, joins for an initial £50m fee, with a further £5m in performance-related add-ons.

Brentford had previously turned down two bids from the Magpies, but the deal was finally sealed just days after Newcastle sanctioned Alexander Isak’s British-record £125m switch to Liverpool.

Wissa, 28, will take on the number nine shirt at St James’ Park. His move follows a drawn-out transfer saga in which he publicly declared his desire to leave, urging Brentford to “keep their word” and allow the move. He also deleted all references to the London club from his social media accounts earlier this summer.

Speaking after completing the move, Wissa said:

“I’m really happy to be here at one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. I’m excited to wear the black and white shirt, and I’ll give everything to help achieve success. I can’t wait to get started.”

Manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at the signing, praising Wissa’s proven ability at the highest level.

“We’ve admired Yoane for a long time. His goalscoring record speaks for itself, but he also contributes enormously to the team with his work rate, pace and strength. He’s a fantastic addition and will fit our style perfectly.”

Wissa joined Brentford in 2021 and scored 49 goals across 149 appearances during his time with the Bees.

He becomes Newcastle’s sixth senior addition of the summer, following Nick Woltemade, Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw. The club also confirmed Woltemade’s arrival from Stuttgart last week in a record-breaking deal.
