Liverpool Smash Transfer Record to Land Alexander Isak : Swedish Striker Completes £125m Switch
Liverpool have sealed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British-record £125m transfer, with the fee potentially rising to £130m through add-ons. The 25-year-old underwent a medical on Monday before penning a six-year deal at Anfield, where he will wear the famous number nine shirt, Sport360NG reports.
Speaking to the club’s website, Isak expressed his ambition to leave a lasting legacy:
“This is the next step for me in my career. I want to make history, win trophies and help the team reach even greater heights. I believe this is the perfect place for me to grow further.”
Liverpool’s initial £110m offer was rejected earlier in the summer, but the Reds finally secured their top target late on deadline day, officially announcing the deal more than two hours after the transfer window shut.
Newcastle’s Short Statement and Isak’s Exit
Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £60m in 2022, scored 27 goals in 42 games last season and played a pivotal role in helping the Magpies win the Carabao Cup, their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Despite that success, the forward made clear earlier this summer that he wanted to move on. He did not feature in any of Newcastle’s opening league matches and even trained separately at his former club Sociedad.
Newcastle confirmed his departure with a terse 37-word announcement:
“Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
Record-Breaking Summer for Liverpool
The signing of Isak pushes Liverpool’s summer spending past £416m, the largest outlay ever by a Premier League club in a single window. The Reds had already brought in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100m, alongside Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni.
Liverpool, last season’s Premier League champions, also tried to land Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in a £35m deal, but the move collapsed when Palace failed to secure a replacement.
Isak’s arrival makes him the third most expensive player in world football based on initial fees, behind Paris Saint-Germain stars Neymar (£200m) and Kylian Mbappe (£165.7m).
