Sounders Stun Messi’s Inter Miami, Claim Leagues Cup in Fiery Final

Seattle Sounders delivered a stunning 3-0 victory over Inter Miami on Sunday to capture the Leagues Cup, a win overshadowed by a heated post-match altercation involving star striker Luis Suarez, Sport360NG reports.

Osaze De Rosario opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a header from Alex Roldan’s delivery. Roldan later converted a second-half penalty before Paul Rothrock sealed the win late in the match, as Seattle’s disciplined defense kept a high-profile Inter lineup, led by eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, at bay.

Tensions boiled over at Lumen Field after the final whistle, with Suarez clashing with Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas, sparking a series of confrontations. Video footage appeared to show Suarez spitting toward a Sounders assistant coach during the melee.

Despite a payroll of $16.7 million, far below Inter Miami’s $46.8 million, Seattle became the first MLS team to win every major North American trophy. The club already holds two MLS Cups, an MLS Supporters’ Shield, four U.S. Open Cups, and a CONCACAF Champions Cup.

“This is huge,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said. “We faced one of the best teams in the world, with Messi at the helm, and our players stepped up.”

De Rosario’s opener followed an early chance in the third minute, when his header was brilliantly saved by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. “It’s crazy, a dream come true to beat Messi in a final,” De Rosario said.

The match drew a record crowd of 69,314, surpassing both the previous Leagues Cup record and any Seattle home attendance.

Miami struggled to assert themselves in the first half. Messi went down after a clash with Vargas, while Jackson Ragen blocked attempts from Messi and Rodrigo De Paul in quick succession.

Miami threatened in the second half, with Suarez orchestrating chances for Messi and Tadeo Allende, but they failed to convert.

Seattle held firm, with Roldan’s 84th-minute penalty providing breathing room and Rothrock’s 89th-minute goal igniting celebrations for the hosts.

“When you dig deep as a team, you can handle pressure like that,” Schmetzer said. “Miami had chances, but we stayed composed and executed when it mattered.”

Both finalists had already secured spots in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Seattle’s triumph guarantees them direct entry to the round of 16, with the tournament ultimately awarding a place in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Orlando City 2-1 to claim third place and a Champions Cup berth.
